What is a War Game? What relevance does it have for business?

For centuries, war games have been used to test, educate or improve tactical expertise in the military. Simulstrat has harnessed the war gaming methodology and applied it to businesses, using the years of experience among the senior staff at King’s College London. Each Simulstrat simulation is a role-play of a dynamic situation involving a number of “players” who each have their own identity within the game. Political, economic, social, environmental, and technological factors are simulated; these are regarded as important external factors that may influence and impact upon the future. Simulstrat can generate simulations that can be applied to businesses in a number of ways: from modelling changing market patterns, to ensuring business continuity during unexpected events. Simulstrat simulations can help businesses to plan for the future by producing data and intelligence; which companies can then act upon. Simulstrat simulations can also be applied to test the robustness of businesses’ existing plans and to train and equip employees to deal with the unexpected. In fact, Simulstrat simulations can be used to model virtually any possible business scenario, and train people to deal with it.

What qualifies Simulstrat staff to produce, model and develop simulations?

Simulstrat’s internationally recognised academic experts are highly-regarded and have wide-ranging expertise in many areas. This includes, but is not restricted to, the areas of strategic management, resilience training, conflict resolution, security and defence risk analysis and regional expertise in most parts of the world. Simulstrat Project Managers and Consultants work with businesses and institutions, alongside the academic experts, to ensure that the simulations modelled and developed are of the highest quality and as realistic as possible. Through the status of its academic founders and the reputation of King's College London, Simulstrat is able to assemble game teams of unrivalled substance and dedicated expertise.

I’m a Business Continuity Manager and an expert in my field; what could Simulstrat possibly offer me?

Crises come from many different sources and accidents arise from unforeseen risks. No matter how experienced or qualified staff may be, nobody can prepare for all eventualities. Simulstrat will work alongside you, providing a unique approach, with expertise drawn from several different fields. We can help businesses to test the robustness of current plans and systems already in place; testing procedures and assumptions to destruction. Alternatively, we can help simulate unexpected events, allowing responses and crisis management techniques to develop within a controlled environment. For further information, please see our Worst Case Scenario Profile Paper.

Is your Simulation model computer based?

No, it uses a fair amount of software, but it is explicitly based on the most complex computer in the world – the human being. Whilst computer based models are useful in certain instances to simulate events, the Simulstrat method involves real people, assembled together over a specified period of time, in a customised simulation. This is a fully interactive process that requires a series of moves between the client and external environment (the experts). Participants are thus forced to make decisions, even when they may not want to, and the consequences of these decisions are also captured. This ensures the results are realistic; something that is difficult to achieve due to the logical limitations imposed by even the most powerful with computer based or generated simulations. Computer software is used to capture the human interactions, to generate aspects of their decision environment, and to analyse the results afterwards.

Which other companies has Simulstrat worked with?

We have to respect the rights of our clients to discretion and privacy. How much does Simulstrat charge for a simulation?

Each simulation is unique and custom-built so we do not have a general “price list”. As you will see from our Customisation page, our simulations are built around client specifications and can therefore take anything from a couple of weeks to a number of months to develop and perfect. This is reflected in our pricing. Please contact us to discuss your simulation needs and we will be happy to provide you with a quote.
